Description

OLD BEAUTY RECIPES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

20 years of collecting the beauty wisdom of the world.

Before beauty became an industry, it was knowledge.

It lived in kitchens.

In gardens.

In hammams and souks.

In mountain villages and desert homes.

In bowls prepared by hand.

In oils infused slowly.

In flowers gathered at the right moment.

In recipes passed from mother to daughter.

And in the women who remembered exactly what their mothers had taught them.

“Old Beauty Recipes from Around the World” is a collection of those traditions.

Ancient beauty recipes gathered across decades of travel, from 120 countries and countless encounters, bringing together rituals, ingredients, stories, and practices that have survived across generations.

Persia.

Oman.

India.

Morocco.

The Silk Road.

Tibet.

China.

Russia.

West Africa.

The West Indies.

South America.

Oceania.

And many places beyond.

This is where the journey begins.

THE STORY

I DIDN'T SET OUT TO WRITE THIS BOOK.

I started collecting it.

For 20 years.

I was working in aviation, which meant I was constantly moving through different countries, cultures, cities, villages, airports, markets, and landscapes.

And everywhere I went, I kept noticing something.

Women who seemed to use very little.

A few ingredients.

A simple ritual.

Something prepared at home.

Something they had learned from their mothers.

And somehow, there was an extraordinary depth to the way they approached beauty.

Not as a battle against themselves.

Not as something that had to be constantly corrected.

But as something to be maintained, cared for, and passed forward.

So I started asking questions.

What is in that bowl?

What are you putting on your skin?

Why do you use that oil?

Where did you learn this?

How long has your family been doing it?

And sometimes the answer was surprisingly simple.

“My mother taught me.”

And her mother had taught her.

And hers before her.

Generation after generation.

THE WOMEN WHO SHARED THEIR KNOWLEDGE

Some of the most important parts of this book did not come from libraries.

They came from conversations.

From women I met in souks and hammams.

In mountain villages.

In desert kitchens.

In homes where beauty was not presented as a product, but practiced as part of everyday life.

Women who would look at me with a certain patience when I asked what they were preparing.

And then, often, they would tell me.

They shared what they knew.

The ingredients.

The proportions.

The rituals.

The reasons.

The stories.

The memories.

They poured their knowledge into my hands.

And I kept writing it down.

FROM TRADITION TO THE PAGE

Over the years, the notes grew.

One recipe became ten.

Ten became hundreds of stories, observations, ingredients, rituals, and connections.

I began to see patterns.

Different cultures using similar ingredients in completely different ways.

Plants appearing again and again across continents.

Water playing a role in rituals separated by thousands of kilometres.

Oils, grains, flowers, clays, spices, seeds, fruits, roots, minerals.

And behind each one:

a culture.

A place.

A memory.

A woman.

A tradition.

Eventually, I realized that these notes needed to become a book.

And so Old Beauty Recipes from Around the World was born.

WHY THIS BOOK MATTERS

BECAUSE BEAUTY HAS A HISTORY.

Today's beauty industry can make it feel as though every discovery is new.

A new ingredient.

A new ritual.

A new “secret.”

A new trend.

But many of the things we are rediscovering today have much older roots.

People were working with plants, oils, grains, flowers, clays, spices, seeds, water, heat, cold, and other natural materials long before modern cosmetics existed.

They developed practices suited to their environment.

They observed what worked for their families.

They refined rituals over generations.

They passed knowledge forward.

The modern beauty industry did not invent the desire to care for ourselves.

The traditions came first.

This book is an attempt to remember that.

THIS IS NOT ANTI-BEAUTY INDUSTRY

It is pro-knowledge.

Modern beauty has brought extraordinary innovation.

But innovation does not have to mean forgetting what came before.

There is room for laboratories and kitchens.

For biotechnology and botanical knowledge.

For modern formulations and traditional practices.

For innovation and memory.

The purpose of this book is not to tell you what you should believe.

It is to let you discover what people around the world have known, practiced, and passed down for generations.

Knowledge becomes more valuable when it is shared.

WATER RITUALS AROUND THE WORLD

From Japan to Argentina.

From Europe to Africa.

From bathing traditions to cleansing rituals.

Water has always been more than something functional.

It can be purification.

Rest.

Renewal.

Community.

Ceremony.

And beauty.

THE GARDEN AS A BEAUTY CABINET

Before there was a beauty aisle, there was often a garden.

Leaves.

Roots.

Flowers.

Seeds.

Herbs.

Fruits.

Plants selected, prepared, infused, crushed, dried, or combined according to local knowledge.

Explore the traditions that turned the garden into one of humanity's oldest beauty resources.

AND THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING

These are only a few glimpses into the world contained within the book.

There are many more traditions, ingredients, recipes, rituals, and stories waiting inside.

120 countries.

20 years of collecting.

Countless encounters.

And behind every recipe, another story.

EVERY RECIPE HAS A STORY

This is what makes the book different.

The recipes are not presented as anonymous formulas.

Where the history and source material allow, each tradition is connected to the context that gave it meaning.

The ingredient.

The ritual.

The culture.

The woman or community behind the knowledge.

The story of how it was passed down.

And, where appropriate, ways to understand or adapt the tradition today.

Because a recipe without its story is only a formula.

The story is what makes it human.

BEAUTY WAS NEVER JUST ABOUT THE SKIN

Traditional beauty was rarely separated into neat categories.

Beauty could be connected to bathing.

To food.

To sleep.

To movement.

To plants.

To community.

To ceremony.

To the seasons.

To preparation.

To rest.

To the way someone entered a room.

To how they cared for themselves and others.

This is one of the most fascinating things about exploring historical beauty traditions:

beauty was often understood as part of life itself.

Not an isolated step in a ten-minute routine.

WHAT THESE TRADITIONS CAN TEACH US

Not every ancient practice needs to be brought back.

Not everything traditional is automatically better.

And not every historical recipe has been scientifically studied.

But traditional knowledge can still teach us something valuable:

how differently human beings have approached beauty.

It can make us curious.

It can reconnect us with ingredients we overlook.

It can reveal the cultural history behind modern beauty trends.

And it can remind us that many of the world's most interesting beauty practices were developed long before beauty became a global industry.

The goal is not to romanticize the past.

It is to learn from it.

WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE THIS BOOK

DISCOVER INGREDIENTS DIFFERENTLY

You may never look at rose, turmeric, saffron, rice, clay, black seed, argan, coconut, or other familiar ingredients in quite the same way again.

TRAVEL WITHOUT LEAVING HOME

Move between continents through recipes, rituals, stories, and traditions.

📖 UNDERSTAND THE STORY BEHIND THE RITUAL

Instead of simply learning what people used, discover why it mattered.

REDISCOVER SIMPLE KNOWLEDGE

Many traditional practices were built around accessible ingredients and thoughtful preparation rather than complicated routines.

CONNECT WITH GENERATIONS

Every preserved tradition represents a line of knowledge that travelled from one person to another.

SEE MODERN BEAUTY DIFFERENTLY

Once you understand where certain ingredients and rituals came from, today's beauty landscape begins to look very different.

THESE RECIPES BELONG TO A LONGER STORY

You are not simply opening a recipe book.

You are opening a window into the lives of people who came before us.

Women who prepared things by hand.

Women who knew the plants around them.

Women who understood the rhythms of their climate.

Women who inherited knowledge without ever needing to write it down.

Women who taught their daughters.

And daughters who remembered.

Until someone forgot.

This book is about remembering.

FROM ANCESTORS TO THE FUTURE

Technology will continue to change.

Beauty will continue to evolve.

New ingredients will be discovered.

New products will be created.

New technologies will transform what is possible.

But progress should not require amnesia.

We can move forward without leaving everything behind.

The knowledge of previous generations can become part of the conversation about where beauty goes next.

That is why these traditions deserve to be documented.

Not because the past was perfect.

But because the past contains knowledge worth exploring.

And future generations deserve the opportunity to discover it.

MORE THAN A RECIPE BOOK

Old Beauty Recipes from Around the World is a collection of recipes.

But it is also:

A travel story.

A cultural record.

A beauty history.

A collection of traditions.

A tribute to the women who kept them alive.

And a reminder that some of the most valuable knowledge does not arrive in a laboratory.

Sometimes it arrives in a story.

Sometimes in a kitchen.

Sometimes in a garden.

Sometimes in a woman's hands.
